Our today’s topic is stopping a runny nose with medical products and home remedies for runny nose.
The theme of runny nose is more relevant now than ever, this is the problem we have been living with all the time and most likely will live in future too. If not we, then our children exactly live with it.
A runny nose is a very frequent problem with which parents go to see a doctor. But despite the fact that this is a very common problem, there are still a lot of questions.
Ways to cure a runny nose is a huge mystery, they are not taught in school, but everyone has their own years of experience in treating rhinitis. So as you understand every grandmother has exactly 2 times more experience than mom and everyone her experience but despite having the best way to stop a runny nose still goes to the doctors.
There are some ways to cure a runny nose without medicine. For example you can moisten the air in the room not to give shot to dry out. But also there exists a real cure.
Medicine for a runny nose
Many people represent that runny nose remedies represent something like magical droplets, which we drip into the nose and as a result runny nose stoppes. And everyone knows that such medicine exists. This medicine received the name vasoconstrictor medicine. It is really the way to stop a runny nose instantly for both children and adults.
So we can say that a vasoconstrictor medicine is a real medicine that helps rather quickly.
There a question arises -if such a medicine exists, why should we suffer? The child is suffering, grunting and coughing. Why cannot we take these drops and drip into the child’s nose?
The first reason why we cannot apply these drops is because they are not safe. They have several side effects. But the most dangerous thing about these drugs is that they are addictive. And if we use them during five or six days, then we become addicted.
That is, the child is visually healthy, there are no visible signs of a runny nose, but once we stop dripping these drops the edema of the nasal mucosa begins. The snot stops flowing, but the child cannot breathe normally with the nose. It turns out some kind of vicious circle.
We should take into account that the drops can cause a spasm of blood vessels, initially only in the nose and further in the process of their use, the action extends to the vessels and in other organs. This can cause headaches and problems with the cardiovascular system. All this is far from safe.
We are opponents of vasoconstrictor drops, but they should be in every house.
And that is why it is important for us to give a clear understanding in this article of when it is still necessary to use vasoconstrictor drops from a runny nose. So you could be sure if you should drip or not drip this drops. And also you will clearly know in which situation it is definitely necessary to use drops.
Here are the cases:
1In case of acute earache
This is not directly related to the common runny nose, but nonetheless. As a rule, when the ear in child got sick, then its disease is caused by the fact that there was a blockage of that mucus from the runny nose – the tube that vents the ear cavity between the ear and the nose.
If we will drip the vasoconstrictive drops in the nose each time when the ear gets sick then there is a chance that we will develop otitis media, eustachitis, and sinusitis.
Nevertheless, we are now talking about a runny nose. And let’s consider other conditions for the usage of these drops.
2There is no nose breathing
If the nose is stuffed up and the child does not breathe with the nose at all, then vasoconstrictor drops are necessary in this situation. Because during an acute respiratory infection, if a child breathes through his mouth at least for one night, then there accumulates mucus in the respiratory tract that further would lead to complications.
3Moderate nasal + complicated mouth breathing
Let’s imagine the situation that the child has moderate nasal breathing and difficulty breathing through the mouth. This refers to breathlessness, various wheezing and occurrence of Croup disease (when breathe in and breathe out become difficult).
That is, there are not only breathing difficulties with the nose, but also in breathing out through the mouth. In such a situation the load on the child’s body is enormous. And of course you need to drip vasoconstrictor drops from a runny nose.
4Complicated both nasal and oral breathing + warm air in the room
Let’s imagine a situation that our child breathes through his mouth, and there is terrible heat in the room and the air is dry and warm. That is, naturally, if the child has difficulty with nasal breathing and breathes hot, warm air, then all the mucus in the throat and nose will dry out.
5Moderate nasal and oral breathing + high temperature
Let’s consider the situation when the child has a temperature between 101.3000℉ 102.2000℉ (38.5 – 39 ° C) degrees. Naturally, that at such a temperature there arises rapid breathing in the child and at the same time it does not breathe normally through the nose.
Naturally, high temperature combined with obstructed nasal breathing leads to a drying up of mucus in the airways. And this is the main cause of bronchitis, inflammation of the lungs and other complications.
If you, as parents, cannot provide cool, moist air in the room for some reason, then in this situation it is also necessary to use drops.
The most frequently asked questions about rhinitis
It’s argued that if a runny nose is not treated, then within 7 days it can pass by itself. Is it so?
Where did this wonderful figure of 7 days come from? What is the most common cause of runny nose? These are acute respiratory viral infections.
As we all know in the fight against our viruses, the body releases special antiviral antibodies, which begin to develop on the 4th – 5th day and reach their peak on the 6-7th day. Therefore, really, most viral infection send on the seventh day.
Therefore, if this respiratory viral infection is accompanied by a cold and you will properly help the child to fight this virus, then there is great chance that it will not need the treatment of a runny nose. It really will be gone by itself on 7th day.
But not treating it does not mean doing nothing! There are many home remedies and preventive actions for the common runny nose.
How to blow your nose properly? Are there any rules for this?
Proper blowing your nose will clearly reliefa runny nose! The situation becomes more difficult when it is about small children who do not know how to blow their nose. This is the main trouble.
How can we make it easier for a child who cannot yet blow its nose? This is not about medicine, but rather about the mechanical effect of sputum removal. In medical institutions for these purposes, there are special devices, which are called the electric pumps. This is a device in the form of a thin catheter, which sucks mucus from the nose of a small child.
Now there exist many devices for drawing off sputum in small children: from simple tubes to sophisticated electrical appliances.
The most important rule of blowing nose in children
Do not cover the nose of the child. This is a common mistake of parents, which leads to otitis. The task of the parent is to collect what the child could blow from its nose, if there something is. To do this, you need to close only one nostril, so you can amplify 2 times the power of exhalation.
The main rule of treating symptomatic runny nose is as follows. Do not let the snot to dry out!
Home remedies for runny nose if it has already begun
Popular wisdom says that runny nose often begins with hypothermia of feet. After all, on the feet there are projection zones of all the organs.
Therefore, at the slightest suspicion that your feet are soaked or frozen, you need to take a hot or mustard bath for your feet as soon as possible. You can also add to them a stick of coniferous extract. At bedtime, it is helpful to massage the arms, neck, and chest.
It is also good to wear mustard socks for the night. Before bedtime, drink hot milk with honey and butter, in which you can add a little soda at the tip of a teaspoon.
Herbal and salt rinsing
Rinse your nose with infusions of medicinal plants: chamomile, coltsfoot leaves, and aloe vera juice, spreading them with cold boiled water, but do not combine with vasoconstrictor drops.
You can wash the nose with a solution of salt: 1/2 tsp. Dissolve in a liter of water, rinse the nose out of the pipette with this solution, and then lubricate the mucous with clean vegetable oil. Also, instead of salt, you can use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
You can apply the method of yoga – rinse the nasal sinuses with salt water from a kettle (1 tsp to a teapot with boiled water). Stand over the sink, one ear down and the other up. Gently pour water from the spout of the kettle into the upper nostril.
The water must pass through all the nasal passages and pour out of that nostril that “looks” down. All this time you need to breathe with your mouth open. If there is pain, the procedure should not be carried out.
In the common runny nose, especially with asthmatic components, it’s very effective to do steam inhalations with plantain extract, coltsfoot, pine buds, eucalyptus, as well as a mixture of eucalyptus oil, vitamin A, peach or aniseed oil.
A very important rule: when instillation and inhalation you should spare the nasal mucosa. Do not use concentrated aromatic oils as drops or for lubrication; be sure to dissolve it in vegetable oil. Frequent instillation of various drugs in the nose also worsens the condition of the mucous membranes.
Onion drops. Finely chop the onion, pierce in a dry clean skillet so that it gives juice, then shift to a clean plate and pour in a little sunflower oil. This mixture should be infused for twelve hours. Then the oil is should be stirred and instilled into the nose, 1-2 drops at a time. If you do not tolerate onions well, you can use beetroot or carrot juice instead of onion mixture.
You can also press the garlic, pour it over the sunflower oil, or even better, with olive oil and hold for 6 to 12 hours. Further this mixture of 1-2 drops should be instilled into the nose. It will sting a bit at first, but nothing terrible, you should bear with it.
In case of hard runny nose congestion there should be useful to do warming of nose by paraffin. It can be done in this way: heat paraffin on a water bath (only not on an open fire, it may explode!), then make a gauze napkin, roll in 3-4 layers, soak it in paraffin, put in polyethylene, wrap in a piece of flannel. This construction must be attached to the nose.
It is advisable to use pure medical paraffin, but if it is not there, you can melt the candle and remove the wick from it. When the paraffin has cooled, refill the hot melted paraffin on the cloth and repeat the procedure. Doing this for 15–20 minutes at night, you will warm up your nose well, and in the morning you will feel much better.
Boiled eggs and buckwheat
You can also warm up the nose in another way: boil two eggs hard, wrap them in a handkerchief and apply to the nose until it cools. Another option is to heat buckwheat or rice groats on a plate, wrap in several layers of cloth and apply to the nose.
The acupressure of face perfectly helps with runny nose if it is done at least twice a day – in the morning after washing and in the evening before going to bed. In order to affect the bioactive points located between the eyebrows, on the nose and the adjacent cheek area, nose wings and the central point of the nasolabial fold and chin (immediately below the lower lip), it is best to use Vietnamese balm.
It is necessary to massage each point for 20-30 seconds clockwise, at first easily, and then more and more, as if pressing your finger inward.
And here is a tool for those who want to get rid of the painful attacks of sneezing. You should strongly, painfully press down the upper lip and nose. This procedure immediately terminates the sneezing reflex.
It is important
If a runny nose does not go away for a long time – this is a serious reason for contacting an otolaryngologist or an allergist. Ordinary acute rhinitis occurs within a few days. If after a week it is still difficult to breathe, there is general discomfort, sometimes headaches, tearing and pain in the eyes, that is risk of complications. Therefore, you should carefully monitor the discharge from the nose and your feelings.
